Best Lugs and Best Road - NAHBS 08

I am proud to announce that I won 2 more trophies at the 2008 North American Handmade Bike Show in Portland Oregon.

Being awarded the Best Lugged Trophy and the Best Road Bicycle Trophy is indeed an honor considering the quality of the bikes displayed this year. Again I have to thank Don Walker and his staff for putting on a great show. Portland was a very cycling friendly city and the free train service around the downtown area was a real plus.

About the Lugged Titanium Frame

I'd like to explain how the Lugged Titanium Bike came to be.

I approached the process from an aesthetic angle. I wanted to build a titanium frame with the same look as one of my lugged steel frames.

For 30 years I have been hearing about the lugged titanium frame that Cecil Behringer of Minneapolis had built. But since Cecil is no longer alive, I had to come up with the procedures myself. There are many people who I wish to thank for their advice and experience that made this frame possible.

First of all I give credit to Ross Shafer (the founder of Salsa Cycles) who came up with a fabrication idea that made the building possible. I can say no more than that.

Anyone who wants to know more should contact Ross and see if he wants to share his process with the public. Other people who helped me include (in no particular order) Chris Hayes - my welder, Brent Steelman, Butch Boucher of Moots, Jim Kish, Carl Strong, Chris Paretich, Mark Norstad of Paragon Machine Works, Doug White of White Industries, Dave Garoutte of DKG, Sean Walling of Soulcraft, and of course Brian Baylis.

The painting was done by Brian Baylis. We discussed the color over the phone. I said I had 2 requirements, one that it needed to have a red decal, and I wanted a "Monkey Vomit Green" color. I guess Brian and I were picturing the vomit of different species of monkeys. Or perhaps there was some mix up, and somewhere there is a "Monkey Vomit Green" Bianchi riding around.

Thanks for looking.
